If you're planning a family trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Tennessee Aquarium is a must-visit destination that offers engaging experiences for all ages. With its two distinct buildings—River Journey and Ocean Journey—the aquarium provides a comprehensive exploration of aquatic life, from mountain streams to ocean depths.
šļø River Journey: From Mountains to Rivers
Our adventure began in the River Journey building, where the Appalachian Cove Forest exhibit greeted us with the serene sight of sleeping river otters. While they napped, we were entertained by trout attempting to swim upstream—a fascinating display of nature's determination.
A highlight was the Lake Sturgeon touch pool. Although our toddler's arms were a bit short to reach the Lake Sturgeon, they were thrilled to dip their hands into the water, giggling with excitement.
The Ridges to Rivers exhibit featured signs with Clementine, a Tangerine Darter, pointing out interesting facts. Our little one loved spotting these signs and learning new things.
But the absolute favorite? Turtles! From various species around the world to a captivating turtle nursery, we spent a significant amount of time admiring these shelled wonders. If you have a turtle enthusiast in the family, this is the place to be.
š Ocean Journey: A Dive into Marine Life
Next, we ventured into the Ocean Journey building. Surprisingly, we encountered lemurs at the top—an unexpected but delightful addition.
The Butterfly Garden was a magical experience. With butterflies fluttering around, vibrant flowers, and even a window displaying chrysalises, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Our toddler, a fan of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," was in awe.
While we chose to observe the stingrays at Stingray Bay rather than touch them, it was still a mesmerizing sight. The Penguins' Rock exhibit was bustling due to a school field trip, so we opted to explore the Secret Reef instead. Here, we marveled at fish, sharks, and a sea turtle. A fun photo opportunity awaited us atop a sea turtle sculpture in the Island Life exhibit.
